TOP NEWS

As border restrictions and lockdown’s continue to ease across Asia (pre Omicorn), all the pent up demand is really starting to heat things up.  Our focus this week in on Thailand which has a literally jammed pack calendar in December with lots of racing and events planned.  Kicking off things on December 1st is the opening of The 38th Thailand International Motor Expo 2021 at Bangkok IMPACT Challenger.  It runs through December 12th and is one of the two biggest shows in Thailand.  The other one being the similarly named Bangkok International Motor Show that traditionally runs during the last week of March.  Although run by different organizers both long running shows are similar in nature and then to be what you would consider a typical Auto Show in the US with a bit of SEMA mixed in.

The other event set to kick of this week in Thailand is the 2nd annual Classic Revival 2021 held at Chang International Circuit, Buriram December 4th and 5th.  The event, not surprisingly, is tailored to classic cars with little limitation of what might show up.  Last years inaugural edition, featured here in Edd Ellison’s fantastic slide show, was a huge success and this year with most of the lockdowns in Thailand having ended promises to be even bigger.  They plan to kick things off in style with a Parade Lap involving possibly 1,000 cars which would be epic!  The two days look to be packed with events including new this year drag and slalom races along with a Cars and Coffee Buriram edition.  Be sure to check out photos and videos in next week’s edition of our own Parade Lap.

With the conclusion of the Macau Grand Prix, the racing front in Asia typically gets pretty quiet.  However this past weekend did mark the return of one major event The Sepang 1000KM (S1K) Endurance Race in Malaysia.  The S1K was first run in 2009 and quickly grew into one of the most popular events on the Malaysia calendar.  When it last ran in 2019 it drew a record 70 entries across the 2 classes of cars.  In the M-Class (modified), Leona Chin and team piloted their Suzuki Swift to a 1st place finish on the heels of her impressive performance in the opening rounds of the Malaysia Championship Series earlier in November.  However, it was a particular car model that was generating most of the post race buzz as the Toyota Yaris was making it’s first ever race debut in Malaysia and it was an impressive one.  The finished the M-Class race a full 3 laps in front of Chin, but a post race penalty knocked them back to 3rd in class and 4th overall.
